Chevrolet launched the Sonic in Brazil, a subcompact crossover derived from the Onix hatchback. The Sonic name previously belonged to a compact car (sold as the Aveo in Russia and some other markets); this version is something different — an SUV body on the same GEM platform.
The body gains 60 mm in length over the Onix (4,230 mm total) and adds plastic cladding, raised ride height (~200 mm clearance), and a 392-litre boot against the Onix’s 303 litres. The Hyundai Creta, which leads the segment in Brazil, starts from R$131,990 — the Sonic Premier at R$129,990 undercuts it by R$2,000.
One engine, two fuels
Turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder, 115 hp. Runs on petrol or ethanol — the latter is widely available in Brazil through the flex-fuel infrastructure. Six-speed automatic, front-wheel drive only.
Two trims
Premier: chrome detailing, 8” digital cluster, 11” multimedia display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. RS: black exterior package, sportier grille with large mesh inserts, optional ambient lighting, parking assistant.
Both trims get blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping, and auto emergency braking. The RS adds the parking system.
One design detail Chevrolet made a point of: the Sonic is the first production model to carry the brand’s recently redesigned logo.
Built in Brazil. Pricing: Premier from R$129,990 ($25,000); RS from R$135,990 ($26,200).
